Young designers use Google SketchUp to recreate Normandy landings
In advance of the anniversary of the Allied landings on Juno Beach in Normandy, France, on June 6
1944, the Dominion Institute is holding a competition for young designers. The Institute is challenging
designers to model the site of the Juno Beach landings, located near Courseulles-sur-Mer, Normandy,
France, for upload on Google Earth, the downloadable virtual globe program.

Designing History is an initiative of the Dominion
Institute.
Awards
The design submitted to the Google SketchUp Forum that is judged to best interpret the events of
Juno Beach will receive a cash prize of $1944.00 (CDN) Canadian and be featured on the Dominion Institute
and Google SketchUp 3D Challenge websites.
Three runners up will receive honourable mentions.
Judging
The designs can include one or more of the following elements of the Juno Beach site. It is recommended that models are low-poly.
- Soldiers (eg. Infantry, Royal Canadian Engineers)
- Artillery (eg. Howitzer, Mortars, Guns)
- Armoured Vehicles (eg. Sherman Tank, the Churchill)
- Landing Craft (eg. Landing Craft Assault, Landing Craft Mechanized)
- Defenses (eg. Concrete Bunkers)
- Ships (eg. Destroyers, Corvettes, Minesweepers, Frigates)
- Topographical Features (eg. Beaches, Hills, Buildings, Waves)
The designs will be awarded based on:
- Quality of the Model
- Completeness of Model
- Level of Detail
- Interpretation and Imagination
